This, my favorite Etoy was made by Alan Kay while we were at Disney, and it brings together work by just about everyone in our group. It depicts a scene with musicians, and a midi player with the score of “Bill Bailey”, controlled by the ‘play’ and ‘pause’ buttons. The scrolling midi player is written in Squeak, and the sound is synthesized live during play. Notice that as you move the players, they grow and shrink with their vertical position, giving a sense of motion in space. Now observe that the midi controls that relate to each musician are tied to the musicians, so that moving them left and right controls the stereo pan, and moving them up and down (far and near) controls the volume. The linkage from musicians to midi controls is accomplished by Etoy scripts in off-screen flap that can be viewed by clicking the ‘controls’ tab on the left side of the screen. All sounds are synthesized live during play - the ‘instruments’ flap reveals a timbre editor for the clarinet. The timbre editor is live and can even change the clarinet sound while the piece is playing.
Enjoy.
